Presentation 2 Final Draft: Graphic Design

EQ: What is most important for an artist to be successful in the field of graphic designing?

(A) Introduction
1. Describe a general overview of your presentation
-It is mainly going to be a power point presentation on who my service learning is and tie it back to my EQ and defining what graphic designing is.
2. Purpose or objectives of your presentation (aka the thesis of your presentation)
-To show my peers what graphic designing is.

(B) Body (back up your purpose with 2-3 major points)
1. Major point 1: Give examples made my graphic designers. I am doing this to show that they are hired to create pieces of art for something specific (movie poster, book cover...) (6 min.)
2. Major point 2: Go over my piece "Northern Lights", and how it helped me take a huge first step. (4 min)
3. Major point 3: Show who my Service Leaning is and why he helps me. (5 minutes).
*For each major point in the body you plan to discuss, put in parentheses how long you think you will present on this topic
4. I am going to tell every person to design a rough draft of a movie poster on a piece of paper. I'll give them a movie genre (drama/romance) with the actors and directors (Keanu Reeves and Kate Beckinsale) and the plot of the movie.
5. How will this activity help the students understand the major points you already covered?
-The first major point covers how a designing is given a piece to do, and given the requirements and wants and needs form the client. They have to meet all of these and bring it all together to be appropriate with the content of what they are presenting or advertising.
-The second point shows the steps I took in design a piece myself. How the actual piece came together and what I had to think of in order to get to where I wanted to.
-The third point has to do with the gathering of the overall knowledge I gained from the past two points.
(C) Conclusion
1. Summarize the essential points and discuss how this is connected to the EQ.
-Point 1: One of my answers to my EQ is meeting the needs of your client. By showing actual works of art and advertising from real designers, I am giving real life examples of what works well and what doesn’t.
-Point 2: This is mostly me going through the process of designing an art piece. Practice is very important to any career, but it doesn’t directly reflect on any of my EQ answers, but to the EQ it does because skill is essential for success.
-Point 3: This is one of my main fountains of knowledge when it comes to the entire field of graphic designing. This is for my own personal use as well as getting answers to my EQ.
2. What was your most important source for this presentation and why?
-Definitely my service learning. He helped me come up with 2 different answers for my EQ. Plus he give me help on how I should continue forward in my own practice for this career.
*You need to also reference research as you are presenting the introduction and body.

Independent Study 1

I, Christian Hernandez, affirm that I completed my independent component which represents at least 30 hours of work.

The following photographs were not completely made by my own hands from scratch. The only piece that is done entirely by me is "Northern Lights". I used Adobe Photoshop CS5 to change, organize, manipulate, and add on to these pictures. I have over 60 hours of me on my computer working on these peices, and although there are more not posted, these were the ones that I have decided to post as evidence of my working.

Defend your work and explain how the significant parts of your component and how it demonstrates 30 hours of work.

My Senior Project requires that I explore many different aspects, techniques, and applications and creation of digital art. Since I started off my project with absolutely no experience

Applied

How did it help you answer your EQ? Be specific and use examples.

    ESLR Check

What is an effective learner at i-Poly? A student who assumes responsibility and expresses personal creativity.
     1. Summary of how you've been an effective learner this year.
    2. Cite evidence from the senior project (be specific and use examples)
    3. What are specific ways that you can improve in this ESLR during second semester?

1)When it comes being creative in a project based learning environment, I always apply the most interesting concepts that time would allow me to apply to any presentation. I do my best to make sure that all the necessary content is there, and as well, that it is presented in the simplest and engaging way. That is my always my mindset when working on a presentation. Also, I like to take the role of facilitator in a group because I see it as the person responsible for making sure everyone gets what is going on (almost like the group leader).

    2) In my senior project (graphic designing), I am constantly using my own creativity to actively keep myself interested in my work, and a to give the art I create uniqueness.  Responsibility wise, I am dedicated to any piece I am working on, willing to spend numerous hours at a time to make sure that it it is finished.

3)My major problem is I dont do most of the required work. The work that I actually do, I always try my best and apply myself to my fullest. But I do cut out on a lot of the work that I am supposed to do. I get very easily distracted, lazy, and I procrastinate, by which it might be too late to really give it my all. I'm not the most responsible or organized, but a way I could fix that would simply be a change in habits and focus.

Service Learning 10 Hour Progress Check

" I suggest to discuss what you have learned about the guy and what he has told you.  Note you haven't completed hours yet."

My service learning expert is John Clifford. He is a certified expert in Adobe InDesign and Adobe Acrobat. When I first met him, he told me that he was a teacher at an art/fashion institute. We then discussed what form of graphic designing I was interested in, and what he specializes in.
In this recent meeting with him, I showed him my EQ, and he gave me 2 answers from his professional perspective. His major answer was publishing. What good is the most amazing peice of art if you cant print it or show it to anyone? His second answer was knowing what is appropriate and understanding the needs of your client.

    What I've Learned So Far

This first one gave me SO MUCH TRAINING. I learned about overlays, different kinds of brushes, Gaussian blurs, and how to manipulate and add colors to add over and under toning. I took an image that was already made, and changed it to be darker and added blood. It took approximately  4-6 hours.
     Before:

    After:

This next photo is incomplete. It helped learn how to draw and create things from scratch, how to apply gradient colors to a selected area, and how to manipulate color to make lighting effects. It was supposed to be the Northern Lights. This one took over 10 hours in total because everything was created and made from scratch, all I had was a blank canvas.

Keep in mind that the hours are crazy because I have to look up tutorials in order to perform the techniques I did. Also, I am extremely new, I had to learn from square one, and make this, which is a pretty far ways to go in 2 months.

    EQ

Essential Question: What is most important for an artist to be successful in the field of graphic designing.

    (1) Define possible terms in your EQ (e.g. successful, effective)
Important- something marked with meaning or having a significant meaning to it.
Artist- one who performs and practices auditory, visual, or any sensual creative art.
Successful- someone who has constant favorable outcomes.
Field- an area of subject or profession.
Graphic designing- a form of art or profession using elements (pictures, data) to present information that is aesthetically pleasing.

    (2) So far based on your research, what are possible answers to your EQ?
Some possible answers so far would be creativity, patients, and knowledge of using the program.
For creativity, a mind with many thoughts and ideas for designs are needed if you are to please your clients or employer. Patients is required because some pieces of work require a lot of work until completion and dedication. Knowledge of know how to use your tools if a big one because they wont be able to even start their piece.

    (3) What has been your most important printed source and why?
The most important piece of text I have is a book called The Fundamentals of Digital Art. It covers many different aspects of graphic designing and digital in general. It goes over influential work, the history, and technologies involved in digital artistry.

    Thursday, October 7, 2010

*The independent component is an opportunity for you top select a direction and create your own component. Each component must demonstrate 30 hours of work. There are two components. Please remember to review the contract.

    Independent Component 1:

    1) Discuss possible ideas yew have to complete this requirement?
My first idea is to take a class up at Mt. Sac. Winter semester applications dont start until the 15th. My second plan would be just to sit on my computer and do designs on photoshop. But I plan to do both at the same time, got to school, and go on my computer and practice.2) How will these idea(s) help answer your EQ?
Since I dont have an EQ at the moment (still working on it), going to a graphic designer class and practicing it at home would cover any EQ I come up with.

    5 min Presentation Reflection

    Post 4B
    Title: 5 min Presentation Reflection
    Label: Presentation
    Content:
    1) What would you say stood out about your presentation performance and why?
    2) What was most challenging to do and why?

    1) In my opinion, I had a very good amount of detail. With each different kinds of digital art, I gave a great description as to what makes it what it is. With each picture, I gave explanations as to how it relates to the categories it falls under, and what makes it a good example of artwork.
    2) The most challenging was the planning of it. Finding out what to do and present was a challenge for me all its own, as sometimes I have perfectionist qualities when I truly want to do well, like I did want to for this mini-presentation. But the main difficulty was timing. I failed in making it fit withing a 5 minute, due to the fact  I felt I had to present more that what I should've.

    Interview 1 Reflection

    Post 4A
    Title: Interview 1 Reflection
    Label: Interview
Content: What is the most important thing I learned from the interview and why?

When I interviewed Sean Wood, I did have difficult time with the quality the information understood due to the lack of sound quality and background noise on his end of the phone line. But the best peace of information he gave me was that in order to succeed in having a career in any digital art, you have to be the best because it is so competitive. With that information, I know now that I have to keep practicing to increase my own skills, that is why it helped me do much to know that.

    Presentation Rough Draft

I plan to present on what digital art is, and the many subfields in it and possible careers that you can have in the subfields. I will start off my showing pictures on some digital artistry, as well as have my poster up on the board. I'll have the pictures going around while I explain the different techniques used and different styles. I will bring many different programs required to create any form of digital art. That will last for 2-3 minutes.

For my final 1-2 minutes, I will talk about my interview with Sean Wood and explain the level of education vs. the level of skill.

To see that everyone understands what digital art is, I will have them ask my any question and I will do my best to answer.
